Who We Are

History

The Institute of Environment and Water (IEW) was established in 2005 as a programme of the East Africa Wildlife Society (EAWLS) to facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues on water resources management in the wake of the water sector reforms. The aim of the programme was facilitates stakeholders’ solution finding processes for water and environmental management. Today the Institute has grown to become a full fledged institution that aims at improving access to water resources for poverty reduction, sustainable livelihoods and environmental sustainability. In 2008, the Institute was registered as a Trust but it continued to operate under the EAWLS and was later in 2009 registered as an independent and not-for-profit organisation in Kenya. Since its inception, the Institute has significantly succeeded in grasping its niche in the water sector where it has considerably gained visibility. Not only do the operations of the institute stretch throughout the country but also in the Eastern Africa Region through its networks and research programmes. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors that oversee its operations including its finance management and the Secretariat (headed by the Executive Director and charged with the day to day operations, management and administration).
